At the start of the year, our trainees were given the brief to design a range of new mugs inspired by Botanical and Geometric designs. We begin with our product blanks and then research various designs, styles, and art forms, to provide us with some inspiration for the task ahead.
Using a combination of digital and traditional design tools, we begin to work with images, shapes, patterns and colour. Trainees learn how to use Canva software on the iPads, stencils overlays, printmaking, acrylics and inks, to name but a few. The approach has been to start with practical artwork and then apply what they've learnt to a digital design process. Sometimes the best designs come from experimenting!
Once we have a few designs created in our digital portfolio we will begin the prototype phase. This can highlight the difference between a design working on paper and on the product itself. Lessons learnt, we adjust and finalise our products and move to in-house production of the finished item. We use mug heat presses and specialist printers to create the final mug from which you will eventually enjoy your hot beverage, or alternatively give to someone as a gift!
Our trainees photograph, and video our products in our studio using iPhones, iPads and simple backdrops that can be replicated at home. We use digital tools to create social media posts and promotional materials.
